You'd be forever stuck wondering if there was another mate in 3 you missed by assuming castling was legal.Įdit: Take this stance, in this problem if they tell you castling is legal it ruins the problem. More so when you think about the possibility of this being a paper puzzle without a solution. Finding castling here is not cool or brilliant, it's silly. "You can figure it out by eliminating all other possibilities and making this assumption about puzzles," is not a good thing. These are nothing more than a gotcha problems where people get to clamor on about how "brilliant" finding castling is when it would never be that way in a game because you'd know it's available or not. In this position in a game I would be WELL aware that castling was available since I played the game. End game puzzles/problems teach mating patterns. In a position that is standard or possible in a normal game, the purpose should be to learn or teach things. It's not something I'll ever agree on so you can stop trying. It relies on a lack of knowledge (in that if it told you castle was on the board it would be a very easy problem) to be harder which is the opposite of what you want in a logic problem.Īssumptions make for bad problems. You and others can keep repeating the "rules" of chess puzzles, it doesn't change that fact. As I said many times, I hate these types of gimmick puzzles. But if you want to use that then it changes nothing, stupid gotchas are stupid gotchas either way.
The only other scenario you can come up with is the 50 move draw? That's a terrible comparison to figuring out castling is still legal. If I was doing this puzzle on a paper, I would just assume king takes rook was how mate in 3 happens per puzzle. Why do we assume the King will take the pawn then? Because it leads to mate in 4 not 3 and is therefore technically better. In this puzzle, if castling isn't legal, you can still get mate in 3 of black plays the "worse" move and takes the rook instead of the pawn.
